Paleolithic Expansion – On the Road to Rome, Italy Part 2
Despite the abundance and fanatical devotion to high carb foods, Rome suits the lifestyle of the average paleogastronomer. Rome is best viewed by foot. It is surprising how compact the historic center is once you learn the basic layout of the city.
Where to Stay
In terms of places to stay, we highly recommend leasing an apartment for a few days or so from Friendly Rentals.

This agency has apartments of all shapes and sizes located all over the the city. If you are really struggling with your paleodiet, you can always cook your own food in the apartment.
Where to Eat
As we have maintained during our whole trip, it is nearly impossible to find a meat and vegetable centric restos. However, if you order painstakingly, you can put together a meal that is virtually pasta and bread free. Avoiding cheeses may be another challenge altogether. Here are our pics. If you hit them all you will have a nice general tour of Rome.
Ristorante Cul de Sac - Located behind the Brazilian embassy which is within the Piazza Navonna, Cul de Sac offers a great salumi selection, and credible fish, beef and lamb main courses. It also has a great wine list.
Ristorante Antica Pisa – Head up the Gianicola for a spectacular view of the city center, then head down via Garibaldi to Antica Pisa for some classic Roman cuisine. No problem putting a paleo-compliant dinner here. There is tripe, braised beef stew, and lots of meat and vegetable dishes a “la romano”.
Osteria La Quercia – Tucked behind Campo di Fiori, a hot little Osteria in Piazza della Quercia, 23. Come for the food, stay for the scene. You will have to comb through the menu to put together a paleo-dinner, but the effort is worth the view.
Gusto – Another happening scene near Piazza di Poppolo. Fortunately, this series of salumerie, pizzeria and wine bar will easily fulfill a paleodiet. Beautiful place, beautiful people, great food. Rome captured in an eatery. Go often.
Where to Fail
If you are going to fail in your paleodiet, you might as well fail at a gelateria. We failed at two of the best in Rome, the Old Bridge Gelateria behind the vatican, and Gelateria Giolitti near the Pantheon.
